What is a Follicular Study?

A Follicular Study is a series of ultrasound scans performed to monitor the growth and development of ovarian follicles (fluid-filled sacs that contain eggs) during a woman's menstrual cycle. It helps track ovulation and determines the best time for natural conception or fertility treatments like IUI or IVF.

Purpose of a Follicular Study:
1. Ovulation Tracking:
o Identifies the exact time of ovulation for increasing pregnancy chances.
2. Fertility Assessment:
o Evaluates the health, size, and number of follicles.
3. Hormonal Treatments Monitoring:
o Assesses the response to fertility medications during treatments like IUI or IVF.
4. Timing Intercourse or Procedures:
o Helps schedule fertility treatments or intercourse for optimal results.
5. Identifying Irregularities:
o Detects issues like anovulation (no ovulation) or poor follicle growth.

How is it Done?
• Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS):
o A small probe is inserted into the vagina for a clear image of the ovaries and follicles.
• Series of Scans:
o Conducted from Day 2 or 3 of the cycle until ovulation is confirmed.
• Follicle Growth Tracking:
o Measures follicle size until it reaches 18-25 mm, indicating ovulation is near.
• Ovulation Detection:
o Monitors the follicle rupture, releasing the egg for fertilization.
