How Photoelectric Sensors Work:

Photoelectric sensors work in such a basic way that they only require three main components to work which include light emitter, a receiver and a processing circuit. The emitter produces a beam of light which is directed to the sensing area. The reflector can be hit by the light and reflected back to the receiver or the object can reflect the light directly to the receiver depending on the configuration.

After the beam of light is broken or bounced off, the receiver picks up the difference and signals the processing circuit. The circuit decodes the optical signal and transforms it into a response in the form of electrical output which can subsequently cause a reaction in machines, the control systems or even safety equipment without physical contact with the item being sensed.

Types of Photoelectric Sensors:

  1. Through-Beam Sensors: The sensors are made up of a separate emitter and receiver that is on the opposite side. The sensor is used to identify an object by intercepting the beam of light between the two units. The through-beam sensors have the best sensing distance and high reliability and are suitable in large industrial applications.
  2. Retro-Reflective Sensors: In this kind, the emitter/receiver is contained in a single unit and a reflector is placed opposite the sensor. The beam of light is sent to the reflector and it travels back to the receiver. Detection takes place when the beam is interrupted by an object. These are small and simple to install sensors.
  3. Diffuse Reflective Sensors: Diffuse sensors are able to detect the object through the direct light reflected by the object. They do not need a reflector hence are applicable during short range use and limited space.
  4. Photoelectric Sensors: photoelectric sensors are specialized instruments designed to measure radiation intensity, either through direct detection or by creating an electrical signal that is amplified and processed at a computer workstation.
